Madeline, Kissing and Dancing

Every once in awhile I'll encounter an artist whose songs hit me so hard I wonder, "How the hell is it possible people haven't heard this?" Such was the case when I first heard Madeline this week after my friends in Austin drove three hours to see her play to a crowd of twenty at the Hemphill house in Fort Worth. I'm going to try to track her down for an interview and review her new 5-song EP next issue, but for now I'll start with Kissing and Dancing, released awhile back thru www.plan-it-x.com

Every song on this 16-track debut is a gem. The recordings, according to the liner notes, come from as far back as fall 2001 and as recently as the spring of 2005. Songs like, "What the devil don't know won't hurt him," "Oh my darling," and "Dumpster dive mother," are the natural and effortless creations of a major talent, to think these lyrics might've been written while she was still a teenager doubles the allure.

Some points of interest: In "Nobody," the percussion track sounds like it might be coins in a jar. In "Scarred by the Devil," she doubles herself on vocals with a tremolo effect on the backing vocal that creates a delicate, subtle effect I haven't heard before. Constant entries of percussion and surprising changes halfway through a song give you lots of kicks.
